Just informal enough
How informal is too informal? When does information leave “socially acceptable” land and cross into “TMI” land? Social media has been a blessing and a curse to so many. It has opened up new and exciting ways to communicate and has sometimes been the only way to communicate (think: Iran election). But social media is just that…social. My social life and my professional life are separate and it can sometimes be a serious battle to keep them that way.
While it can be nice to let others know that you aren’t a robot sent from space and do have hobbies outside of writing press releases and drafting PSAs, those pictures of you at that bachelorette party (Like this local Brownsville teacher) and the link to your new favorite death metal band with a perchace for vulgar language might not be the best thing to ‘tweet’.
We’ve all heard the horror stories of people getting fired after an mis-timed ‘tweet’ or Facebook status was discovered by their bosses. In my time as a student, I was thoroughly warned time and time again against the dangers of unprotected Facebooking and Tweeting.
Remember kids: protection is key. Always check your privacy settings before participating in social media.
..was that joke too vulgar for a professional blog?
Olympic Fever
I’ve never found the winter Olympics to be as exciting as the summer games. It may be because there are a smaller number of athletes or because the events don’t hold my attention as well. For example: I sat and watched two speed skaters go in a circle 14 times today. It wasn’t the most exciting thing I had ever watched, especially when compared to the on-the-edge of your seat action that was Michael Phelps’ 4×4, gold-medal relay race 2 years ago.
The opening ceremony last night was nice but nothing crazy, unless you count the clogging/tap dancing/fiddle playing lumberjacks. That was kind of crazy.
But that didn’t stop me from getting teary eyed and emotional last night when Georgia’s delegation marched out with black armbands to honor Nodar Kumaritashvili, the Luger who lost his life during a practice run that very morning, when the P&G’s new commercial for their “Thanks Mom” campaign (you can watch it Here on YouTube) and it certainly didn’t stop me from feeling an immense sense of pride when the US team marched out, the largest delegation of the games numbering at over 200 athletes.
The Winter Olympics might not be nearly as exciting but they certainly stir up the same emotions of pride and tradition as its warmer counterpart.
Now if there was only something else on besides speed skating. When does curling start?!
